Core business matrix

Core competence

EIDEL has designed and delivered products and control systems to the defence-, aviation- and space industry since 1966. System definition of hardware and software designs are covered. EIDEL provides standard products as well as custom designs. A key element is combining customer requirements with state-of-the-art technology into high quality products.

Key programs

Projects
EIDEL handles projects on module, system, hardware and software level. The projects range from consept definition and development to production and delivery of operational units. A few examples are given below.

Eidel flight test system (EFTS)
The Eidel Flight Test System (EFTS) is a cutting edge, complete data acquisition system. It is designed to be highly modular and flexible, covering a wide area of user applications ranging from basic encoder tasks to some of the most demanding data acquisition challenges. EFTS comprises an Airborne System Architecture and correspondingly Ground Based System Architecture.

"Have-Quick" Remote Control System
This is a project which has been developed on specification from the Norwegian Defence Logistic Organisation (NDLO). The system is a time- and frequency information system for use in ground based anti jam communication systems. First batch in the delivery phase was in 1990/91. The equipment is now under contract with EIDEL as main contractor to the Norwegian defence and as sub-supplier in NATO projects in several countries, via Marconi Communications S.p.A. in Italy. Second generation equipments was delivered from 1999, handling all frequency bands.

Radio Management System
EIDEL is at present delivering a new management system for the ground to air radios in Norway, used for communication with military aircraft. The system is designed to control a number of radios from an operation center, where the radios are located at remote sites, up to several 1000 km away. The system can allocate frequency hopping and/or encryption to any radio.
The system is distributing correct timing to all radios connected to the system. Time is received from GPS. Rubidium oscillators in the system enable the system to maintain correct time over a significant period, should the GPS time input fail.
The communication system is controlled by duplicated PC's, with Windows platforms. The duplicated control computer (one active and one hot standby) together with other duplications and the free selection in the system of resources to the radio sites, makes the system redundant with minor impact from single equipment failures.
The remote control equipment at the radio sites is designed to connect to any radio make. By remote controlling the radios, sites don't need to be manned or guarded, as all sensitive equipment is located in control centres. Control centres may be disconnected to reduce manpower requirements during periods with low activity.
At the control centre, all equipment is installed in 19 inch racks. All racks are delivered pre cabled for easy installation. The total installation, testing and commissioning of a large control centre will take typically one month.
Training requirements for technical personnel has proved to be very low as long as the technical operators are familiar with Windows based Man-Machine interface. A comprehensive built-in test system is included with the system.

Missile Telemetry
Several PCM encoders and conditioning modules have been designed for specific customers.
- A datacollection system with Solid State Recorder was qualified for operation at 8000G and -40°C
- Dedicated conditioning modules has been designed to interface asynchronous data streams to the EE240 Encoder
- The EE248 GPS receiver module for the EE240 Encoder was originally designed for tracking of missiles. GPS data is
processed and telemetered both as raw data and clear text position
- A datacollection and data storage system was designed for use inside high speed ship propellers. A wireless remote
control system was included
- Custom functions have been made to the EE350 Decoder software to decode and present non-standard data formats.
GPS receiver messages are regenerated in the EE350 decoder software for output on the PC COM port to standard map
plotters

Artemis Diagnostic Package
This project was managed by ESTEC, the European space, research and technology centre of ESA. EIDEL had the main contractor responsibility for developing a system to evaluate solar cells contamination versus ion propulsion for future satellite applications in general the Artemis satellite in particular. The project is divided in two.
- A feasibility study was focused relevant phenomenas and how they could be measured.
How to measure liquid level in weightless tanks was a separate task.
- A diagnostic instrument including sensors were designed to measure possible effects from the ion propulsion
engines on the spacecraft itself and optical systems onboard. The instrument was manufactured and qualified for flight.

Key products

Radio Control System (RCS)
EIDEL has developed the Radio Control System (RCS) as a part of the SISAM system, which is the acronym for the secure voice communication system. The man-machine interface and the telephone system is developed by THALES.

Remote Crypto Distribution System (RCDS)
With a new concept for remote distribution of cryptographic keys EIDEL has, within the area of Communication Security, contributed to the feasibility and technical study of implementing RCDS in Norway. EIDEL intend to continue to be a major player in the implementation, and this is expected to include remote distribution of crypto variables.

Telemetry Products
EIDEL's standard telemetry products include PCM Encoders, PCM Decoders and Solid State Recorders. Complementary units and interfaces are often made on custom basis. The EIDEL Telemetry Systems are based on 35 years of experience at Eidel. They are focused on short learning time, ease of use and the ability to meet new requirements.

PCM Encoders are data collection systems for sensor or analog and digital signal sources. The sensor output may be voltage, current, resistance, charge or frequency. A signal conditioning mo-dule is often required to convert the sensor signal to a standard form matching the input of the PCM encoder. The EIDEL PCM encoders formats the sensor data to a serial digital continous bitstream according to the IRIG standard 106. This is a common standard worldwide in military and aerospace test and monitoring applications.

Recording of measurements data can be short term before retransmission or long term before analysis. Traditionally data was recorded with a taperecorder. EIDEL provides short term storage with Solid State Recorders. These use Flash memories to sustain hostile environments where tape transport becomes a problem. The EIDEL Telemetry Decoders have a built-in data storage to PC disk function. This is useful for long term storage of telemetry data and following playback analysis of the sensor signals.

The PCM decoder synchronise to a serial data stream coming from an encoder, online, via radio, from a recorder or from a data file stored by the decoder. The received datastream is decoded and the individual sensor signals are extracted for visualisation. The EIDEL decoders are PC based. They follow the common IRIG 106 and similar international standards.
The new EE360 Airborne Decoder can be used both in UAV's and other applications for control, but also directly connected to a laptop computer using USB 2.0 for data analysis. It will no longer be required to use a tower pc. The EE360 can easily be combined with the EE240 Encoder resulting in the option of having both a decoder and encoder in a single box.

The EE315 is no longer produced. We will however support the system as long as we have spares. If you have any question in regards to this system or would like to upgrade please contact us for further information.
